Memoir Writing Class

CAMP Rehoboth will host a memoir writing class on four Tuesdays from March 3 - 24, 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. The class will be taught by David DeWitt, who spent 18 years as an editor and writer for The New York Times and has taught writing classes at six colleges or universities. Each class will cover some of the foundational skills of creative nonfiction, including the power of a writer’s individual voice and the importance of specific scenes and anecdotes. But mostly, the four sessions will operate as workshops where writers can develop and make progress toward their own projects, be it short-form essays or longer-form books. 

Throughout, the class will play with what LGBTQ+ people might especially have to offer the world through stories. Workshops will work on idea generation, exercises, and sharing drafts (and revisions!) of work with partners, small groups, and the class. Participants will also have the opportunity, if they want, to get written feedback from the instructor.  But as much as possible, the workshops are designed for a collection of peers who all have something to contribute to our collective growth as writers and humans. (And we’ll likely have some fun, too.)

About David DeWitt

David DeWitt spent 18 years as an editor and writer for The New York Times and has taught writing classes at six colleges or universities, springing from his bachelor’s in journalism and his master’s in composition pedagogy and theory. His post-graduate work at Syracuse in creative nonfiction, an expansive genre that includes memoir, led to his teaching classes for Syracuse in the field. He later brought that expertise into the daily editing and coaching of personal columns, which also fall under the creative nonfiction umbrella. In addition to his many book, theatre, and film reviews, he’s also published creative nonfiction in The Times as well as in TDF Stages and Salon. In the past year he’s edited two books — one biography and one memoir — and he’s begun writing his own book-length memoir, exploring the mental health struggles experienced by him and his sister. A Lewes resident since 2023, he was a longtime member of the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association and is a current member of the Gay Coaches Alliance.
